Introducing 5th Graders to the World of the Performing Arts
Arts Partner: FLY Dance Company
Symphonic FLY bridges the gap between street dance and symphonic music, highlighting more parallels than differences. Students learn about the composers featured in the dances and are encouraged to believe in themselves and shoot for the stars.
In the 2024-2025 school year, the Hobby Center is excited to present a diverse range of free educational field trips to Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall with the goal of serving 5th grade students in Houston. Through this TEKS-aligned series, 5th grade students are introduced to dance, music and/or theater in ways that are engaging, fun and further their learning and belonging.
Learn More about the Hobby Center’s educational programming and future opportunities for all Houston school districts.
This project is supported in part by an award from the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Mid-America Arts Alliance.
About FLY Dance Company
Based in Houston, Texas, FLY Dance Company offers a full range of performances as well as community outreach through edutainment (educational shows), dance workshops, lecture/demos (topics include cyberbullying, positive life choices etc.) and residencies.
FLY’s performance style is called “theatrical hip hop” — “theatrical” because acting is an essential element of the style. FLY has been spreading their infectious “theatrical hip hop” around the world since 1992. Notable performances include Washington’s Kennedy Center, Miller Outdoor Theater, Jacob’s Pillow, Vail International Dance Festival, Lincoln Center and Bob Hope Theater
