Introducing 5th Graders to the World of the Performing Arts

Arts Partner: YUNGCHRIS & Sonkiss’d Dance Concepts, Originally Commissioned by Performing Arts Houston
Fine Arts, Reading Language Arts, Social Studies

My Posse’s on Broadway is a Street Dance production representing the authentic Houston Hip-Hop dance movement that emerged in the early 1990s. It narrates the story of its arrival in Houston during the early 1980s and its current evolution, with two Breakers from Houston representing the U.S. in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. The story starts with a high-energy but brief history of the culture of Hip-Hop and its origin. The narrator, also the high school dance teacher, prepares to teach his class on the first day of school. The lesson is knowing their local historic dancers and crews and not just the popular dancers from social media. They don’t know anything about the amazing dancers from their city, Houston, Texas, who made history, but they’re about to learn today! My Posse’s on Broadway combines all four elements of the Hip-Hop culture, including graffiti, dancing, DJing, and Mcing/storytelling. As the students learn about their local heroes, they become inspired to write their names in history.

This project is supported in part by an award from the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Mid-America Arts Alliance and The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion 2025 BIG grant.
