Presented by the Hobby Center

Breaking Bread is a new series presented by the Hobby Center in partnership with James Beard Award-winning chef and TV host Chris Shepherd. He trades his culinary jacket for a mic and sits down with creatives and thinkers who inspire him and who’ve influenced culture for unscripted chats about experiences that shaped them.

Unforgettable stories, small club vibes, and a killer menu curated by Chris especially for the Founders Club

Joe Kwon—known to many as the cellist of The Avett Brothers—joins Chris for a thoughtful, wide-ranging conversation about curiosity, craft, and creativity. Born in South Korea and raised in High Point, North Carolina, the self-described foodie shares his roots on stages around the world as they explore his Joe Kwon path from lifelong musician—with a detour through computer science—to artist, wine enthusiast, and collaborator, reflecting on how discipline and instinct shape everything he pursues, from music to food. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at how passions evolve, how ideas connect across worlds, and why a melody or a shared meal can mean more than the moment itself.

About Joe Kwon

Avett Brothers member Joe Kwon began playing the cello as a young child and continued to play throughout his high school years at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. Deciding to focus his college career on something other than music, he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in computer science and got a job at a tech corporation. Still playing the cello in his spare time, he caught the attention of The Avett Brothers when his band, Big Pretty and the Red Rockets, opened for them in a 2006 show. Scott Avett, Seth Avett and Bob Crawford asked Joe to record with them for their album Emotionalism. The band then realized that they wanted a full-time cellist, so they asked Joe to join them as a permanent member of the band. Joe promptly joined The Avett Brothers in 2006 and has played with them ever since.

ABOUT THE BREAKING BREAD SERIES

Back when Chris Shepherd was running restaurants, he would place uncut loaves of bread on the table for guests to tear apart together, a way to get people talking. He’s always believed the table is one of the last places where community happens naturally. That idea is the heartbeat of this series.
