Apollo’s With Open Arms season triumphantly concludes with the live world premiere of In the Shadow of the Mountain by Jennifer Higdon, the world’s most performed female living composer. This final work of Apollo’s 20×2020 commissioning project is an intensely emotive, exquisitely crafted string quartet drawing inspiration from the composer’s childhood in Appalachia, connecting thematically to her Grammy- nominated Cold Mountain opera.
Pianist and activist Lara Downes – recently named 2022’s Classical Woman of the Year by Performance Today – and violist Marlea Simpson, a fellow at the prestigious New World Symphony in Miami, FL, partner with Apollo for the southwest premiere of Florence Price’s recently discovered Piano Quintet in A Minor.
Apollo also presents new music by Libby Larsen; a Millennial composer making waves, Jessie Montgomery, who is the current composer-in-residence for the Chicago Symphony; and a new commission for string quartet by celebrated African-American composer Adolphus Hailstork, inspired by the spiritual Deep River.
