Relaxed and Sensory Inclusive Performance Series

Every person connects with live performance in their own way, and that’s something we celebrate. The Hobby Center’s Relaxed and Sensory Inclusive Performance Series offers a more relaxed environment, giving audiences greater flexibility to enjoy the arts.

Each event includes thoughtful elements such as quiet and activity areas in the lobby, the freedom to move or take a break when needed, sensory supports such as fidgets and earplugs or earmuffs, and trained staff and volunteers who are ready to help. It’s all part of our commitment to making the performing arts more accessible and welcoming for as many people as possible.

What can you expect at a Relaxed and Sensory Inclusive Performance?

• Lower sound levels, with reduced or eliminated startling and intense sound effects.
• House lights kept at approximately 50% throughout the performance.
• Quiet and activity areas in the lobby, available before and during the performance.
• Trained staff and volunteers available throughout the event to provide assistance.
• Sensory supports including fidgets, earplugs, and noise-canceling headphones, are available in the lobby.
• Online and printed social narratives to help prepare for your visit and the performance.
• The freedom to bring comfort and support items.
• The use of phones, tablets, and other small electronic devices for communication or self-regulation. Please be mindful of volume in the audience chamber.
• The flexibility to leave and re-enter the theater whenever needed. If you anticipate taking breaks during the performance, we recommend selecting an aisle seat whenever possible.

Social Narrative
Our social narrative, I’m Going to the Theater, can help you and your family prepare for a visit to the Hobby Center. Social narratives for specific productions are available at least two weeks before each performance.

Schedule a Pre-Visit
If you’d like to become familiar with the Hobby Center before attending a performance, we’re happy to arrange a pre-visit. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the lobbies and theater, locate your seats, and become familiar with restrooms, concessions, and other amenities.
