The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO)’s 2019 tour, “Jazz Beyond Borders: From the Golden Gate to the Great Wall,” travels across the globe exploring the global tradition and evolution of jazz. Each of the tour’s ten stops combines the 18-piece orchestra’s musical prowess with historical and cultural narration from artistic director Charlie Young. The Orchestra will be joined by special-guest Grammy-award winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, described by the Washington Post as the embodiment of “creative spirit in jazz.”
In Houston, SJMO present a collection of music ranging from historic Duke Ellington arrangement from the Smithsonian archives to contemporary arrangements from Germany award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling’s recent recordings. This bespoke concert experience weaves a historical narrative of Houston’s influences on the evolution of jazz including a special feature of local legend Shelley Carrol and the Texas Tenor tradition.
