Aperio, Music of the Americas / Zilkha Hall

APERIO, Music of the Americas returns to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts' Zilkha Hall with Jumping the Groove, a program exploring the impact of Jazz, Blues, and Funk on contemporary chamber and solo music. The great traditions of cabaret and cocktail music combine to thrill and charm in Paul Schoenfield's exuberant Caf´e; Music. Aaron Copland's Four Piano Blues hearken back to the age of early jazz, contrasting with the post-modern mix of minimalism, blues, and bebop heard in John Adams' Road Movies. Funk Studies by Derek Bermel pays homage to the brilliance of Thelonious Monk, while Hannibal Lokumbe's John Brown and Blue offers a defiant social statement invoking the primal spirit of the blues.
