Karen Stokes Dance

Field Trip Performance | Grades 2-6

Kicking off storytelling month in February, the Discovery Series at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts presents "Framing Dance" with Karen Stokes Dance. In "Framing Dance" students investigate dance, answering the question "What does it mean?" Using storytelling as the launching pad, the students take a journey that starts with a story of Cinderella and ends in the abstract world of contemporary dance. Through viewing dance in a polished theater setting, students engage their own imaginations by considering the meaning of dance through live performances by Karen Stokes Dance. Students have the opportunity to discuss their reactions with the company members, as well as join the dancers on stage in a performance. "Framing Dance" impacts art appreciation as the fundamental concepts can be adapted to music, visual art and theatre. "Framing Dance" is an exciting and unique multi-media, interactive event that includes projections, performances by the company, narration by company director Karen Stokes and an on-stage experimental event with the students.
