The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts and Uniquely Houston are pleased to partner with the Houston Independent School District and other local school districts in presenting the 2009-10 Discovery Series. This year’s programming at the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall will highlight classroom supported arts discovery, music, dance and theatre from the Houston based Musiqa and Travesty Dance Group.
Each program has been designed with the musical, dance or dramatic content as the starting point for classroom connection. Each program in Zilkha Hall includes interactive content and will be followed by time with the artists for questions and answers, and further exploration.
The Discovery Series is a touchstone for today’s students and tomorrow’s performers, audience members, and “arts hounds.”
Tickets are $5.00 per student for each program. Bus transportation will be compensated by Uniquely Houston; however, each school is responsible for making their own arrangements to and from Hobby Center for Performing Arts. To reserve your tickets contact Byron Williams at 713-520-9264 or bwilliams@yahouston.org.

Around the World with Musiqa is an innovative multi-media, interactive concert that illustrates how folks songs, the shared music of a community, can be transferred by a composer into something rooted in tradition yet vividly personal. The children are invited to sing-a-long with the musicians in folk songs from Africa, South America, the Far East, Europe and the Untied States. Musiqa's musicians then perform settings of these folk tunes by distinguished modern composers. The children gain a fuller understanding of the universality of music and discover how ancient melodies and texts can be constantly re-imagined. A narrator guides the children through each selection. Surtitles enable the children to follow along and sing with the lyrics. Props, lighting and sound effects help create a complete theatrical experience. The all-star cast includes soprano Karol Bennett and actress Susan Koozin.

Kicking off storytelling month in February, the Discovery Series at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts presents "framing Dance" with Travesty Dance Group. In "Framing Dance" students investigate dance answering the question, "What does it mean?" Using storytelling as the launching pad, the students take a journey that starts with a story of Cinderella and ends in the abstract world of contemporary dance. Through viewing dance in a polished theater setting, students engage their own imaginations by considering the meaning of dance through live performances by Travesty Dance Group. Students have the opportunity to discuss their reactions with the company members, as well as joining the dancers on stage in a performance. "Framing Dance" impacts art appreciation as the fundamental concepts can be adapted to music, visual art, and theater. "Framing dance" is an exciting and unique multi-media interactive event that includes projections, performances by the company, narration by company director Karen Stokes, and an on-stage experimental event with the students.
