Houston Melharmony

Oct 7, 2017
Apollo Chamber Players / Zilkha Hall

Houston Melharmony features the world premiere of new music inspired by Indian ragas by the "Mozart of Indian music" (Wisconsin State Journal): renowned slide instrumentalist and composer Chitravina N. Ravikiran. The new work is based on Ravikiran's system of Melharmony, a ground-breaking approach in world music that creates fusion between harmony-centric systems (Western classical/jazz) and melody-centric systems (Indian classical). Also explored is the profound influence of Indian music on American Minimalist composers Philip Glass and Terry Riley.

Program features dances from Silambam Houston and guest artist Robin Kesselman, Principal Double Bass of the Houston Symphony.
